By Nancy Lord, ADN: Book review: ‘Elaine’s Circle,’ released in new edition, highlights strength of hope and community
Elaine Moore, a veteran teacher in Eagle River, Alaska, is a firm believer that the classroom is, first and foremost, a community—and that learning is best when shared in a circle of peers. When one of her students, ten-year-old Seamus Farrell, is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, Elaine, her students, and her innovative methods of teaching are put to their most severe test. Elaine’s Circle is the true account of this small-town teacher who led her fourth-grade students through the biggest challenge of their young lives. This book provides a heart-wrenching, intimate look at the utterly remarkable achievements of this dedicated teacher, a supportive community, and a group of children who rallied to make Seamus Farrell’s impending death an unforgettable lesson about life.

Bill Allen (April 6, 1937 – June 29, 2022)[1] was an American businessman who was the CEO of the Alaska oilfield services company VECO Corporation. VECO was an Alaska-based oil pipeline service and construction company founded by Wayne Veltri (VECO is short for Veltri Co). Bill Allen was born in New Mexico and at the age of 16 left for the oil fields of Alaska to become a welder to help support his family. VECO began as a one-truck welding and repair operation that grew to become a major player in the Alaskan and worldwide oil industries’ support services business. He built a for-profit prison in Barbados as well. VECO also was a worldwide player in the oil industry, having divisions in many major oil markets, including Sudan, Russia, Mexico, Venezuela, and Syria.[2] VECO had a major impact on the economy of Alaska and employed over 5,000 people worldwide.

Spirit Things
By Lara Messersmith-Glavin

A collection of essays that evoke an adventurous spirit and the craving for myth, Spirit Things examines the hidden meanings of objects found on a fishing boat, as seen through the eyes of a child. Author Lara Messersmith-Glavin blends memoir, mythology, and science as she relates the uniqueness and flavor of the Alaskan experience through her memories of growing up fishing in the commercial salmon industry off Kodiak Island.

Hey all… there is 24 hours left (Until 6 pm Sunday June 26) to be a part of the launch of my wife Joan’s new book ” Shattered Dreams– Finding Hope in Tragedy”.
This is the true life story of the four tragedies (one for each of our family members) my wife has gone through in our family’s life.… intractable seizures with our daughter Hannah, my life and death plane crash in 1992 during the Iditarod, Joan’s battle with breast cancer, and our son Ben’s 95 foot fall down the fire ladder resulting in a traumatic brain injury.
She talks about each calamity and the faith walk it took in order to make it through those tragedies. Many people have tragedy in their life worse than ours. But we have certainly had our fair share.
Since we put it on Kickstarter a little over a week ago, we have met our goal in order to send it to the printer. You can help us go beyond our financial goal to get it printed . Now, any help above that will pay for the writers who helped us make the book s reality. Your pledge at a certain level will have your name printed in the book as a supporter— or just pre-order a book and show your support. THANKS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION.
You can read more about the project and support it on Kickstarter here: https://www.kickstarter.com/…/shattered-dreams-finding…
