On the day a well-meaning Anchorage Assembly approved a new bike ordinance claimed to make the state’s largest city safer for those who pedal, I was on my bike grinding up the Hillside Drive “Bike Route” while being close-passed, which is illegal, by a whole string of cars and trucks going faster than the 45 mph speed limit, which is also illegal.

KINY: Brandon “Andy” Burrell sentenced to 45 years, with 25 years suspended, for sexual assault
The victim did not attend any of the sentencing hearings but submitted an impact statement. “It is best for me to continue on the path of healing I am currently on, and not to step back into the courtroom, but I would be doing myself a disservice not to admit the toll this has taken on me or my path in life.” She discussed at length how Burrell harmed her, stating, in part, “I don’t know how you get justice for what I’ve lost, what we’ve all lost. I lost my sense of safety, security, peace of mind and sense of self. … I know this has been an experience I would not wish upon anyone. Today I’m choosing to no longer be a victim but a survivor.”

KTUU: Midtown Central Transfer Station move means some closures for the public

For the remainder of August, the Transfer Station will close to residential service every Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Transfer Station will close entirely from Monday, Aug. 21 through Friday, Aug. 25. Toth said the Transfer Station will reopen with a skeleton crew from Aug. 26 to Sept. 7.

A grand opening of the new facility is scheduled for Sept. 7, with operations beginning on Sept. 8, when the old facility will officially close.

Toth said more information is available on Solid Waste Service’s Facebook page.

“It’s going to be a little bit of a bumpy ride so we are asking for residents to please be patient,” said Toth, promising that Anchorage residents would find the new facility well worth their wait.

Michael Dexter Hankins: HAVERTIGO “My brother, a couple of years later in Lubbock, Texas, coaxed me into riding something called a Tilt-A-Whirl.”
In 1972, having just graduated from high school, three friends from East High, along with me, late one night went to a small carnival next to the Valu-Mart shopping center. All went well until Jeff, Michelle, and Cathy, decided we needed to ride the Tilt-A Whirl. I wasn’t keen on the idea, but didn’t want to come across as wimpy either.

I made it through without getting sick amongst them, but quickly excused myself, finding a spot behind the generator trailer to hurl. My friends never knew. The next morning around five, noticing my wallet was missing, I drove back to that carnival, checking different Tilt-A-Whirl cars until finding it on the floor of one.
