By Tony Wade, Daily Republic: Q&A with author Sherri L. Smith
Q: So how did you come up with the idea for your first book, “Lucy the Giant?”

A: I was visiting a friend who lived in Alaska. One of his friends gave me a tour of the University of Alaska campus in Juneau and she said three words that ended up being the title of my first book. She was talking about some kids she taught and said, “One of them, this girl, Lucy.” Then she sighed and said, “Lucy the giant.” And like a bell went off in my head. I wrote it down on a legal pad. Soon after I was on a ferry and was writing down ideas and a woman came over to me and said, “Excuse me. Are you a writer?” And I said, “no,” and she said, “But you’re writing.” Those two things, plus a moment of quiet up there, convinced me that I was supposed to be writing.
