By Lauren Maxwell: Fairview businesses say drugs are bringing more crime

Some people who work in a Fairview neighborhood say they’re frustrated by the constant crime and drug dealing. To them, it’s a problem which is only getting worse.

Rick Morrison opened an auto dealership near 10th Avenue and Gambell Street, more than 40 years ago. He has since sold the dealership but still owns the property. He said the area used to feel safe, but not anymore.

“My concern is, I wouldn’t let my kids or my grandkids walk through here without being escorted,” said Morrison. “And, quite frankly, when I drive through, and this is my home, I’ve been in this place for 40 something years, I’m uncomfortable.”

Survey: Most Alaska teens think drug misuse not a ‘serious risk’

Alaska teenagers are showing “concerning” opinions regarding the use of prescription and illicit drugs according to a statewide survey, even as they reduce other risky behaviors like underage sex and smoking.

The state Department of Health and Social Services released its biennial Youth Risk Behavior Survey on Wednesday, breaking down responses from more than 1,300 teens in 40 Alaska high schools on issues ranging from automotive behavior to self-esteem. The survey compares responses from males and females, as well as a number of racial groups.

Senator Mia Costello GUEST COMMENTARY: Why Senate Bill 91 needs to be repealed

Alaska needs to repeal Senate Bill 91. I say this as a former supporter of the bill. I even co-sponsored it. I fully believed in the bill. I don’t believe in it anymore.

Senate Bill 91 has failed — and ever since its passage I have watched my neighbors and fellow Alaskans suffer as crime has increased, seemingly without end. We need to start over.

By Patrick Moussignac: Empty chairs outnumber people at hearing on SB 91 fix
Instead of the required 24-hour notice on the hearings, lawmakers made the announcement the night before. That led to lots of empty seats and some complaints at the LIO, where Anchorage resident David Manzer wasn’t happy.

“If you have a hearing on a Saturday, please post the call-in number to the website,” Manzer urged legislators. “It says call in to get the number, yet when you call in of course that number is only manned during the workdays — Monday through Friday, 8 to 5.”
