By Amy Carney: Creative Play for Ages 5 and Under, Christmas Cookies & Ornament Making
On Saturday, December 21 from 10-11am, join us at the Sheldon Jackson Museum for our Creative Play – our new free program for children ages 5 and under. Creative Play focuses on fostering social skills, movement, and creativity and gives parents and their youth 5 and under a place to gather for imaginative play with sensory toys. A parent must be present and should call 747-8981 to register.

Also happening on Dec. 21st is a Cookies & Crafts ornament making event, a free event for all children of all ages happening Noon until 3:30pm or until supplies run out. This program does not require registration, but requires a parent be present.

Winter hours at the Sheldon Jackson Museum 10am to 4pm Tuesday through Saturday, except holidays. Winter admission is $5 for adults and $4 for seniors. Visitors 18 and under are admitted free of charge. Accommodations are available for visitors with a disability. Please contact the museum for more information at 907.747.8981.

Anchorage Police Department: It’s holiday travel time! Don’t be a juice jacker victim.

Throughout history smart people have come along and invented something intended to make all of our lives easier. And they do. Until mean-hearted people show up with nefarious intentions and find a way to use these good things for bad reasons. It’s why we can’t have nice things. Case in point:

For good or bad, many of us have come very dependent on our electronic devices which are items that contain batteries that must be charged. Some smart person came along and put USB charging stations in airports for all of us holiday travelers to use. GREAT IDEA. Until that aforementioned bad person came along and invented Juice jacking. Juice jacking is a scam that can drain important personal information from your phone while you’re using a public USB port to charge up. This is why you should not use these charging stations. Do one of these things instead:

Bring your own AC adapter. Otherwise known as that tiny brick that comes with your cell phone and plugs into a standard 110v outlet. It’s all you need to keep your data safe.
Use a data blocker like the Juice-Jack Defender or the PortaPow USB Data Blocker.
Carry a power-only USB cable.
Carry a portable charger.
If prompted, do NOT grant access to your cell phone.

Tis the season for clogged airports, lost luggage, and choking down that certain relative’s cooking that you REALLY cannot stand. Don’t add to it by handing over your information to the bad people. That’s just one more headache you do not need.

Anchorage Police Department: We’re in the middle of shopping season – keep your purchases safe!

Christmas is only a week and a half away! Weren’t we just carving the Thanksgiving turkey? Where in the world does the time go? Good for you if you are all done with your holiday shopping. Now you can just sit back and relax while the rest of us are still running around like crazy people trying to get things done. As a reminder, here are a few tips:

If you’re shopping in person make sure you keep your vehicle locked. Once you’ve made your purchases, hide them in your car prior to driving to your next destination. And keep all of your receipts on your person instead of in the shopping bags.

If you’ve decided that shopping from the warmth of your home while wearing your pajamas and fuzzy slippers is the way to go, then make sure to keep an eye out for those packages to show up on your front door step. Should some inconsiderate soul steal your stuff, please file two reports. Not only do we need to know about it but so does the entity who delivered the packages (USPS, UPS, Fed Ex, and etcetera). You can file your police report online with us at http://www.muni.org/Departments/police/forms/Pages/OnlineReportingSystem.aspx. If you have great suspect information then please call APD Dispatch at 3-1-1 (option #1).

Assuming you’re on the nice list and not the naughty list – Santa will be visiting you real soon. Get those stockings hung up and prepare the milk and cookies. The good kind of cookies – not those weird ones with the dried fruit in them. BLECH. You don’t want Santa to abruptly turn around and leave do you?
