Women's Issues and Empowerment

Alaska Native Women's Coalition
We are committed to the elimination of personal and societal violence in the lives of women and children. We are dedicated to the empowerment of all victims and believe in the right of all people to live without fear, threat and oppression. We believe that through exploring the traditional cultures of the native people of Alaska and taking a closer look at the historical impact of colonization, we can begin to better understand the grassroots causes for the increase in domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking incidents.

Alaska Women's Hall of Fame
The mission of the Alaska Women's Hall of Fame is to celebrate the women who have shaped Alaska.

The Alaska Women's Hall of Fame is a collaborative project of the Zonta Club of Anchorage, the Alaska Women's Network, YWCA Anchorage, the Alaska Women's Political Caucus, the Anchorage Women's Commission, the University of Alaska Anchorage and a large number of interested Alaska women. Together they have created a web-based virtual hall to honor women who have made significant contributions in any discipline or field of endeavor in Alaska. The first women so honored, from throughout the state, were inducted into the Hall of Fame in March, 2009. Visit the website to review their names and histories and learn how to nominate outstanding women you know.

Alaska Women's Lobby
Started nearly 20 years ago by a group of women statewide who wanted to impact the legislative process in a coordinated effort. The Alaska Women's Lobby is still the only women's organization that hires full time lobbyists during the legislative session. The Lobby advocates on behalf of women and children, publishes a weekly legislative update during the session, and an annual legislative report. The Lobby is funded solely by contributions from supporters and is governed by a Steering Committee in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau.

Emergency Contraception Project
Dedicated to making Emergency Post coital Contraceptive Pills (ECP's) more accessible to women in Alaska. In many parts of the state women are unaware of this service so that they not only do not ask for it, but when they do ask for it, there is not a health provider to meet their needs. The Emergency Contraception Project group meets monthly to work on two aims: make women more aware of the service through health education and public information AND make providers aware of the need and how to offer the service and to educate themselves on the issues.

Alaska Women's Lobby started nearly 20 years ago by a group of women statewide who wanted to impact the legislative process in a coordinated effort.

    Women In Safe Homes (WISH)
WISH is a shelter where women in crisis will be safe and have time to make decisions about their future. We provide emotional support, counseling, legal or medical advocacy, education about different forms of assault and an awareness of issues which oppress women. Children are also provided for in a large communal and comfortable setting. We have Child Advocates program which provides services to children who have been victims of violence and /or sexual assault.
