By Eric Bork, Alaska Public Media: The 50th Anniversary of the Hillside ski trails in Anchorage
The Anchorage Hillside Ski Trail System is 50 years old this year! The first five-kilometer ski loop was cut by Service High School families and coaches in 1971. Over time, the trail system has gradually expanded to its current 24 kilometers, many of them lighted for night skiing. The ski trails at Hillside are used by hundreds, and sometimes thousands of people each day, for exercise, recreation, and sometimes racing, and the trail system’s impact on the local community is difficult to overstate.

Eat Your Words from Edible Alaska: #22 What’s new in 2022?
Hey there,

We aren’t exactly into numerology over here, but even so, it seems pretty cool that our first newsletter of 2022 is #22! Auspicious? We hope so. “Start as you mean to go on,” is one of our favorite nuggets of wisdom which we thought we learned from Mary Poppins, but the internet thinks it’s not a quote at all, just a saying. At any rate, we don’t usually go all in on crazes like trends and new beginnings for the new year and all that, but phew! (Oh, and trend-avoidance notwithstanding, the New York Times says kelp will be hot and Specialty Food Magazine puts its money on mushrooms. We’re here for you, 2022.) We’re ready for something new. Aren’t you?

Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum Annual Meeting to Feature Preston Singletaryby LAM Webmaster on January 14th, 2022 in Sheldon Jackson Museum, Museums

For Immediate Release
January 13, 2022

On Saturday, February 19, 2022, at 2:00 pm, the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum will host their Annual Meeting at Harrigan Centennial Hall and simultaneously on Zoom. This year, the Friends are proud to present guest speaker Preston Singletary (Tlingit).

Singletary is an internationally recognized artist working in glass who draws upon designs from his Tlingit cultural heritage.

According to his website: “The art of Preston Singletary has become synonymous with the relationship between European glass blowing traditions and Northwest Native art. His artworks feature themes of transformation, animal spirits and shamanism through elegant blown glass forms and mystical sand carved Tlingit designs.”

Singletary’s artworks are included in museum collections across the country. His most recent exhibition, Preston Singletary: Raven and the Box of Daylight, opens in late January at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC.

The Friends are so pleased to offer our community the opportunity to attend a presentation by this highly acclaimed artist. Please note that this event is free of charge, but in-person seating may be limited. All are welcome to join via Zoom.

Please check FriendsofSJM.com/AnnualMeeting or the Friends’ Facebook page by Feb. 10 to learn if reserved seating is required and for the Zoom link. Please visit the City of Sitka website for Covid-19 mitigation information. This event is made possible with the support of Aspen Suites Hotel Sitka and Sea Mart. To learn more, email friendsofsjm@gmail.com, visit www.friendsofsjm.com or call (907) 747-8981.
