Suzanne Downing Must Read Alaska: Fake news bit down hard on the fairytale of the Igiugig airport runway lights
The Igiugig lights had been damaged earlier this summer by a contractor. They were repaired, and then the kids bludgeoned them last week. The village residents knew the lights were out. It’s kind of a regular occurrence in village Alaska.

But the New York Times went with the fairytale headline: “The Runway Lights Failed, So Villagers Used Their Headlights To Aid An Airlift.”

In another telling it would be, “Igiugig teen hooligans could have cost a young girl her life.”

With a backlog of maintenance at airports around the state, the Department of Transportation is likely to have to send in the battery powered lights, which can be brought out as needed. They can be locked in a storage locker when not needed, and maybe they’ll be safe from the light-whacking teenagers.

It’s not the romantic ending to the tale, but it’s a patch until the repair order for vandalized runway lights at Igiugig can get in the queue.

Fall in 907LibraryLove with new programs and services
Fall Programs and Community Conversations

It may be a while until we can meet in person, but we still have great programs to help you connect with us, the community and each other.

Job Lab Online!

One of our most popular employment programs is back! Job Lab will now take place via Facebook Live and 1-on-1 appointments on Zoom thanks to our community partner YWCA Alaska. Join us this month on September 4th and September 18th and check out our calendar for future dates and how to join.

Poetry Social

Our bimonthly online gathering hosted by our Mountain View Library is a space for poets, poetry fans, and the poetry curious. During each hour, participants will have opportunities to share their writings, listen to other poets, and engage in guided writing activities. Poetry Social is a casual, recurring social gathering for the poetry inclined, to provide a social network during times of social distancing. Learn about our next event.

Book Clubs

Our classic book clubs have gone virtual and we’re adding more! Join us to chat about mysteries, romances, rotating titles, what you’re reading now and the brand new Noname and SciFri book club picks. See our full list and learn how to join the conversation.

Storytimes

Facebook Live storytimes will restart on September 9th. We will be live with a new storytime every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 11:30am. Storytimes will be available for about 2 days after they are live. Watch them on our Facebook page!

See our full calendar of events on our website and be sure to follow us on social media.

New VolunTeen Opportunity

Is your teen looking for volunteer opportunities? Do they have opinions on a book? Teens 13-18 can email a brief (at least 100 words) summary and review of a book they’ve read this year, with their name and grade to: TeenUnderground@anchorageak.gov. They’ll earn 1 volunteer hour with every review submitted. Reviews will be featured on the Teen Underground Instagram and Teen Services page of the Anchorage Public Library website.

This day in the Way Back Machine: Flight 1866 crashes, 11 souls lost

This day in 1971, an Alaska Airlines jet crashed near Juneau, headfirst into a mountain, killing all 111 people on board.

Memoir material: I was coming home from being an exchange student in India, and was scheduled on the same flight, the very next day. It had been a very long flight from Bombay. I was heading back to Juneau-Douglas High School for my senior year.

We overheaded to Anchorage because no pilot wanted to take any more chances after what was, at the time, the worst crash in US history, and it took a couple of more days to get into Juneau, where everyone was still shellshocked.

The following summer, I worked at the law firm of Robertson, Eastaugh, Monagle, and Bradley on behalf of some of the family claimants on that flight, compiling their stories for the lawsuits underway.

Many Alaskans remember that day. Many lost loved ones. Maybe you have memories. Send me what you remember of Flight 1866: suzanne@mustreadalaska.com (and this means you, too, Bob C.)

Today, I will fly in to Juneau under much safer conditions, thankful for the GPS coordinates on mountaintops all around, pioneered by Alaska Airlines. Juneau, here I come, so please move the clouds aside, just in case.
