By Jin Chong, Anchorage Press: Momma O’s knows fried fish — and more

AKME Chats
We’re SO excited to be collaborating with the Thomas Memorial Library in Cape Elizabeth, Maine for this new virtual conversation series! Each week throughout the winter, we’ll be meeting up virtually to share late morning coffee and conversation with the library staff, patrons and residents of Cape Elizabeth and surrounding areas. Though separated by 4,500 miles, Alaskans and Mainers all share the experience of persevering through long, cold, dark winters. So rather than go it alone during this difficult season and this year of extreme isolation, we’re joining forces, making friends and bridging the physical divide that separates us. You’re invited to join us for this experiment in long distance community building, and all you need for the journey is a curious mind. Each Wednesday our libraries will be co-hosting lively conversations with kind, interesting and thoughtful people we might never have had the chance to meet if not for this strange year. And you need not fear the usual conversational pitfalls of boring small talk or uncomfortable subjects: Our librarians will be facilitating these discussions around fun and interesting themes as well as occasional outside materials. And since this year has been hard enough already, all talk of politics and the pandemic are off the table! Come warm your heart and widen your social circle in a friendly, curious atmosphere as we enjoy this rare opportunity to connect from afar. Let’s explore the idea of just how big a Community can be! We’ll be meeting every Wednesday at 11:00am AKST via Zoom. Please register by filling out the form below so that we can send you the Zoom link to join.

New Photography Exhibit Opens Nov. 5 – Ben Huff’s Atomic Island
by LAM Webmaster on October 28th, 2021 in Alaska State Museum, Events, Museums | Comments
For Immediate Release
October 28, 2021
Atomic Island, Ben Huff Solo Exhibit
November 5, 2021-January 29, 2022
The Alaska State Museum presents photographer Ben Huff’s new work, Atomic Island, a portrait of the abandoned WWII and Cold War Naval outpost on the Aleutian Island of Adak. The island, instrumental in the disruption of a mainland advance during WWII, and later a nuclear submarine surveillance post, was abandoned by the Navy in 1997. At its height, the island housed over 6,000 people; today fewer than 100 call Adak home full-time. Huff uses his own large-format color photographs, mixed with archival images from the Alaska State Library, to show the past and present of a forgotten island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
The exhibition opens Friday, November 5 at 4:00 pm. At 6:00 pm in the APK lecture hall, Huff will give a talk about his travels to Adak and his process of making photographs. The lecture will be recorded for later broadcast and available online courtesy of KTOO 360TV, at ktoo.org/show/at-the-apk/. To prevent or slow the spread of COVID-19, the Alaska State Library, Archives, and Museum at the APK in Juneau will have limited capacity in the galleries as well as limited seating in the lecture hall.
Huff will provide in-person exhibition walk-throughs throughout the duration of his exhibit, including:
Friday, November 19 at noon
Saturday, December 11 at noon
Saturday, January 29 at noon (last day to see the exhibit)
Ben Huff is one of six artists selected for the Alaska State Museum 2020-2023 Solo Artist Exhibition Series, along with artists Alison Bremner Naxshageit, Sonya Kelliher-Combs, Gail Priday, Jannah Sexton-Atkins, and Mitch Watley.
A person experiencing a disability who needs accommodation for events hosted by the Alaska State Library, Archives, and Museum can contact the Division’s ADA coordinator at (907) 465-2912. Please contact us a week in advance so we can make any necessary arrangements.

An annual pass that allows unlimited visits to the Alaska State Museum and the Sheldon Jackson Museum in Sitka is available for $40. Assistance is available for visitors who have special needs. Please contact visitor services at 465-2901 before the visit.
